Martin is a grumpy old man who prefers to spend his time in solitude nose down in a book. He cares deeply about his family, but usually isn't very good at showing in any other way than bickering at whatever seems wrong or shouting at his kids (nowadays only Noah, since Beate has grown up to be an adult) whenever he feels he isn't in control of their whereabouts.
